Willer's Wanderings - Ryton

Willer's Wanderings - Ryton
The season is about to start and President Wilson visits Ryton - a club on the up.

This week visit was to Ryton. Here is an example of what can be done by maximising use of RFU grants and fund matching.

They now have four top class pitches (as shown in the picture) thanks to a new drainage system installed three years ago mainly funded by RFU grants.

The club house has recently been refurbished, again with the help of RFU grants, fund matching and making full use of reclaiming VAT on previous projects.

As well as refurbishing the bar come function room they installed two RFU standard changing rooms similar to those in the new West clubhouse, and added four smaller changing rooms and a new shower area. This gives the facility to operate both mens and womens rugby simultaneously.

The match was first round of County Cup against Hartlepool. When Hartlepool arrived the first person I spotted was the much travelled former West player Andrew Foreman, who for probably the tenth season is insisting this will be his last.

Hartlepool were well supported by ten committee men all in blazers and club ties plus and number of other supporters.

The match was won by Ryton who had the edge in the backs 32 – 17.

I was well looked after by Ryton hard working Chairman Charles Thorburn who had been responsible for obtaining most of the funding for the refurbishment and County RFU Committee Representative Robin Wannop.

There was a hot and cold buffet after the match. When I commented to Charles how well they fed the players, he told me that was for my visit and they would be back to pie and peas next week.

Beer John Smiths and Bodingtons, food as above

Next Week Horden and Peterlee. New name, new club house
