We won the try scoring contest  four to one but had to be content with two bonus points as home kicker Owen Gillvray had a field day

The  full back kicked all of his first seven goal attempts. - then when he finally failed his effort came back off the post to set up his forwards for the home side's only try of the game and the match winner.

As a result we had to be content with two bonus points, which was enough to keep us in third place in North One East.

Another bonus was the form of Liam Checksfield, who looked comfortable in the centre, and even more so when moved to fly half for the final quarter when Zac Southern limped off.

Checksfield looked like being the hero when John Bunter (pictured) went over in the corner after 75 minutes, after we opened the home defence with some sharp interplay along the 22. He stepped up no take the conversion from the touchline and his kick sailed between the posts to give us a 22-21 advantage.

That was our only successful kick of the afternoon. By comparison Gillvray got his side moving after eight minutes with a straightforward effort from 25 metres.

Andrew Rollins promptly replied  finishing off a move which saw Aaron Myers break quickly from a maul to set Ryan Painter into space.

The lead wasn’t to last long as Gillvray slotted penalties after 20 minutes and 35 minutes before Adam Coates scored West's second try of the afternoon. Myers had once again been the first to react by taking a quick penalty.

We  turned round just two points behind, but the gap was quickly widened when Myers upset referee Colin Tovey who yellow carded the West flanker after penalising him at the breakdown.

Gillvray slotted the kick from 30 metres. However, 14 man West came back with storming rugby which had Wheatley Hills in all kinds if disarray in their own 22 with Sam Miller eventually powering over the line to bring the score level.

The inevitable response was another Hills penalty from wide on the right, and then Gillvray nonchalantly knocked an effort over from the half way line to give his side a 21-15 lead.

Again we came back - with Luke Mallinson looking lively on his return - and desperate defence saw home fly half Craig Barker sin-binned before the visiting pack drove over the line for Bunter's touchdown, and that excellent conversion.

The one point lead hinged on us being able to stop giving away penalties, but with two minutes left on the clock we weres penalized again at the scrum and Gillvray stepped up.

There were sighs of relief from the West support as his kick rebounded off the post, but despite it falling into the hands of  Greg Edwards he wasn't given time to clear as the home pack reacted quicker than his West colleagues.

The turnover ball gave the home side their only chance of a try all afternoon and one they gratefully took. Gillvray actually missed the conversion ,and wet did mount one final attack down the left, unfortunately full back Connor Fewster was unable to collect a pass as the backs attacked down the left wing.

Did we get any penalties or did we miss them as well? You shouldn't score 4 tries to 1 and get beaten.
