Consett were missing a couple of their imports through suspension and injury, but to their credit they pulled one or two players out of semi-retirement to try to continue their proud record in cup competitions.
We certainly gave the competition due respect by naming a full strength side with the result that Consett rarely got in the visiting half in the first forty minutes.
Zac Southern set the ball rolling with a 40 metres penalty before fly half Stu Waites jinked his way through from 20 metres. He set up an easy conversion for Southern who went on to have a 100 per cent success rate with his goal attempts.
Consett full back Nick Cook scored with his first attempt of the afternoon with a long range penalty- only for West to come straight back with a long clearance kick from Luke Mallinson.
We stole the ball from the resulting maul with Stu Waites sending Southern clear with a long looping pass. The full back still had a lot to do but managed to evade two tackles as he went over.
No 8 Sam Miller was next on the score sheet - bursting through two tackles to go over on the half hour, and he did it again right on the half time whistle. Eldon Myers made ground up the right wing, and when the ball was spun left the West back row were lined up to receive with skipper Dan Boatman offloading to send Miller over.
There was more of the same at the start of the second period. A tremendous burst up the right win by Luke Mallinson resulted in a well-timed inside pass to the supporting Stu Waites who had a clear run in.
Consett then had their best period of the game eventually resulting in their their consolation try - second row Dale Raine touching down as a rolling maul forced the West pack back over their line.
West skipper Dan Boatman went to the bin as Consett continued to pressure the West forwards, but it was the visitors who had the final word.
Replacement wing Danny Quinn did well to pick up a wayward pass from Peter Youll and he made ground up the right wing before offloading to Andrew Rollins. The powerful hooker was still looking for his first try of the season but he was brought down just short. Fortunately, Chris Atkins was in support and he collected to go over and complete the scoring
