Stags 7 Rovers 3

By Carlo - September 9 2014
Stags 7 Rovers 3 The stags got their season off to a winning start with a rather scrappy 7-3 victory over our local rivals at Brinkburn. As you would expect from a local derby the game was fiercely contested by both sides with both keen to take the bragging rights but there was not much in the way of free flowing rugby.

West dominated the set piece, in particular the scrum, regularly shunting Rovers back and turning over the ball however due to the stop start nature of the game we found it difficult to create and build any phases of play.

With the Colts team game being called off Rovers graciously let us utilise a strong bench of youngsters, however these changes ultimately affected our consistency of play.

Despite this all but two of our bench got on the field to play rugby which is the more important aspect and a very good issue to have when it comes to future selection.

Out try was scored by the outstanding prop Tim Blades following some excellent forward play in the Rovers 22. Despite the lions share of possession we failed to cross the whitewash again.

As the lads begin to train more regularly and play together the clinical finishing will come. All in all a very good day for many reasons and starts the season with an all important win. Well done.
