Two Tries  We delivered the perfect response to last week’s disappointing result at Rochdale with a five-try victory over Driffield.

We have been on the end of a few heavy defeats to Driffield in relatively recent times so it was good to start balancing the history books with a one-sided result in our favour. Despite persistent rain having left tricky conditions we delivered a well rounded performance with both attack and defence working well but the standout work was in defence with hardly a tackle missed and some thunderous hits being delivered.

Luke Mallinson, deputising in the goal-kicking role for the injured Stu Waites, pushed an early penalty wide but we were gifted the first score of the game when, after 15 minutes, he kicked towards the corner only to see the covering defender slide over the top of the ball and leave Greg Edwards a simple touch down.

Not content with one gift try Driffield almost gave Davy Tighe another on his return to first team action but his interception was whistled back by referee Candlish for offside. Mr Candlish then found himself a little too close to the action as a heavy collision left him requiring treatment but thankfully he was able to recover and retake the whistle.

The return of the wind and rain made it increasingly difficult for both sides and scoring chances were few and far between in the first half. We finally extended our lead three minutes before the break when Tighe took a quick tap penalty and found Liam Bailey who stepped inside the drifting defence to score under the posts. Mallinson added the conversion.

Driffield started the second half on the attack and spent 5 minutes camped in our 22 but that excellent defence held out. Moving the ball up to the other end of the field we scored our third try, Ryan Painter the man to score it with a typical sniping break and finish under the posts to give Mallinson the easy conversion. Pushing the lead out to 19-0 it was already looking too far back for Driffield just seven minutes into the second half.

Conditions were now improving and we started to make greater inroads in attack as we searched for the fourth try bonus point. It came after 54 minutes and started with a superb break from Mallinson. The full-back cut through the Driffield defence with a great run and when the ball was recycled Tighe delivered a perfect pass to Peter Youll to send him in for the try in the left corner.

Bailey then rounded the afternoon off with his second score 4 minutes from time, popping up in support and stretching well for the line after he was stopped just short. The conversion came back off the post but despite that this was a comprehensive win and a satisfying performance ahead of next weeks tricky visit to unbeaten Cleckheaton.

Good team performance and some good tries. Driffield report is also very fair but can someone clear up why we went to uncontested scrums at the end please?
Driff say it was our fault?

Good team performance ... some great tackling when needed and at last we have some backs who can penetrate. Well done to Davey Tighe for a great game as a stand-in stand-off.

Some really good rugby played in difficult conditions and we deserved the comprehensive win. Great to see Davy rolling back the years!

Video now added.

WPA - we still had a front row at the end of the game [Rollins, Dixon, Pinchen] so the uncontested scrums were not down to us.
