Rochdale 26 West 3

Rochdale 26 West 3
Yellow card Our run of victories finally came to an end at the hands of a determined and well organised Rochdale side. ..

The tale of woe began on the A1 when their coach started to fill up with diesel fumes. As a result the kick off was delayed half an hour while a replacement coach was sent.

It caused a minor disruption to the away team’s preparation - but not enough to make a difference.

Defence was the order of the day as both sides tackled well. However,  it was Rochdale’s domination of the line-out and their determination at the breakdown which ultimately won them the game.

We were fortunate on 20 minutes when Stu Waites appeared to block lively winger Jimmy Flitcroft closely followed by Liam Bailey’s refusal to roll away from the tackle.

Both players were spoken to but escaped a yellow card. Duffy missed his penalty attempt just two minutes after succeeding when we were once again penalised for not realising.

We did get three points back after our first concerted attacking effort. Sam Miller took the ball at pace after the forwards rucked their way into the home 22. He was stopped just short of the line with the referee going back to award the penalty for a previous Rochdale offence at the breakdown

We had another chance when Sam Miller intercepted just outside his own 22. His charge up the left wing ended when he was tackled 25 metres short. The support play was there but not for the first time we knocked on as the forwards piled in.

Then just before the break when the ball was quickly moved out to the right by the West backs and there was definitely a try on the cards, but referee Andy Daniels spotted Greg Edwards and Andrew Cheslin  crossing.

Instead, Rochdale used the penalty to get back into ourhalf to force a second penalty kick right on half time to make it 6-3 at the break.

The home side started much the better in the second half and looked to be in at the left corner only for the final pass to be thrown wide of winger Aaron Howarth.

Their pressure did produce another penalty score when Andrew Cheslin was yellow carded for not releasing in the tackle - perhaps a bit of as harsh decision as he appeared to get back on his feet. Regardless, he deserved a punishment for kicking the ball away in his frustration.

Rochdale took further advantage and four minutes later they got the first try of the game. Centre Jon Mair going in at the right-hand corner after the West defence was stretched.

We did get back into the game thanks to a couple of surging runs from Jonny Boatman, and at last we looked capable of breaking down the stout home defence.

But our eagerness to get back into the game came unstuck when a looped pass out on the left was picked up by Jon Mair. He sprinted fully 75 metres to deny any hopes we had of getting back into the contest.

The final chapter on an afternoon we will want to forget came with the very last move of the game when stand-off James Duffy went in on the overlap to set himself up for an easy conversion.

Sounds like one of those days. Good chance to put it behind us this Saturday and it sounds like Rochdale will be a match for anyone on their own patch.
