West 43 Horden 14

Pinchen Injured The result was welcome as was the performance but the likelihood is that we may have to go into next week's first league game missing four players with long term injuries.

Second row Owen Bennett and winger Scott Butcher both suffered knee injuries with the former having to be carried off, while right winger Tom Armstrong suffered a shoulder injury and prop Ian Pinchen concussion.

Horden began the game strongly forcing West to put in some big tackles – one of which saw Pinchen have to be helped off after putting in a hit on Dan Greener.

Former West duo Luke Watson and David Heckles combined well after ten minutes, but the chance to score was lost to a knock on before West began to get in the game.

Ryan Painter made a break down the right and fed winger Tom Armstrong but he was tackled just short of the line.

Then Adam Coates made a surging run from just inside the 22. He had men outside him but went for the line himself only for referee Paul Fincken to judge that he had been held up.

However, West were not to be denied and impressive No 8 Sam Miller picked up and dived over from the five metres scrum with Luke Mallinson adding the conversion.

Tom Armstrong was in action again on the 20 minute mark when Greg Edwards and Peter Youll combined well in midfield to send the winger clear. He opted to cut inside and was brought down injuring his shoulder and ending his game.

West continued to press and went further ahead from a line-out with Jonny Boatman finding space from the ensuing maul to dive over with Mallinson making it 14-0.

With two players already off the pitch West were dealt a major blow when former Horden skipper Owen Bennett – an impressive summer addition to the West pack – had to be carried off with a knee injury after being tackled from the side.

Horden’s hopes of getting back into the game were then dealt the blow of losing Richie Thirkell to a red card. He appeared to put in a kick at Danny Boatman after the pair wrestled on the ground - Boatman  receiving a yellow card as his punishment.

We took advantage adding a further ten points before the break thanks to a penalty from Gav Robinson - on for Stu Waites in a pre-planned switch -  plus a fine blind side run from Painter converted by Robinson.

The home side continued in a similar vein at the restart with a fine 40 metre break by Liam Bailey eventually setting up the opportunity for Painter to break clear. He sent in Robinson close to the posts.

Sam Miller scored his second after 50 minutes – again after the West pack mauled well from a line-out -  and then completed their scoring on 63 minutes.

Once again we opted for a scrum from a penalty opportunity and this time Jonny Boatman picked up and fed the lively Painter  who beat the cover to make it 43-0.

We continued to run the ball whenever possible but a dropped ball in our own half was to cost us. A grateful Andrew Turner picking up and beating two tackles to set himself up for the conversion.

Horden then scored the try of the game breaking from a scrum five metres from their own line and racing up the right wing. Winger Craig Jones ran a fine inside line to collect the ball forty metres and he finished in style to give the visitors a well-deserved consolation.

Kne.es can be the longer term injuries, depending on extent shoulder to depends on extent. Concussion has a mandatory period these days but not long term one presumes but sorry for all the guys involved. Not a good way to start your season!!
Seems a good workout and an adequate win and so on with hopefully a winning season and return back to the National leagues. Best of luck WEST and to all the teams representing the club

Pleasing thing was that the lads who came on all did great jobs. Even before Horden went down to 14 men we were looking good and the way we handled their big pack bodes well for the types of packs we will face in the new league.
Well done to everyone and lets keep it going.

Now that kindergarten has restarted I do not want to encourage him. However it has to be said that our injuries were things that can happen in any game and just unlucky on our part.
