Stags quash the Reivers

By Chris Harrison - October 17 2012
West Stags travelled up to Morpeth to take on the Reivers. The hosts 2nd string. The day was pleasant as we crossed over to a pitch in an attractive park like setting.

West started well and stayed in the home sides half for the first 10 minutes without really threatening the try line.

Peth began to play themselves out of their half and missed a penalty on 13mins.

However on 16mins they crashed through the centre and despite desperate efforts the centre was able to score despite bouncing off the post pads! (7-0).

West still remained under pressure particularly due to missing first up tackles and silly penalties but on 25mins they ran out of defence. A kick through was regathered at a ruck and then moved wide for Martin Boatman to outpace the cover out wide.

The game was at times a bit of a mess as West tried to play running rugby but constantly making mistakes to put themselves under pressure. The home team too failed to put anything meaningful together.

A long kick out of defence by West was chased well and Peth kicked poorly in return. This was gathered on half way by speedy young hooker, Nathan Wales, who showed his pace, just like last week, to beat several defenders on his way to the line. Zac Southern converted (7-12). His reward for this was a place on the wing as injuries forced a reshuffle for West.

Right on half time Peth pulled level when they broke from a scrum and some very average defence allowed them to the line where a nice offload put them over.

HT (12-12).

West started the 2nd half well and won a lineout 10m from the home line. Youngster Sam Miller, playing his first senior game, looped around the back of the line and drove and then wriggled his way over. Southern converted. (12-19).

The game then settled into a to and fro battle until on 19mins the Stags extended their lead when a nicely worked backs move allowed Southern to burst through the Peth centres and round the full back to score a try which he converted. (12-26).

On 35mins West ran out of defence but were too loose, lost the ball and the home team picked up to score wide out. (19-26).

With a few minutes left it was squeaky bum time but West hung on despite still throwing a dubious pass or two when a more controlled effort may have been more suitable.

Too many errors and daft penalties made the Stags job really hard and although I applaud the running style adopted there still comes a time when a player has to make the right decision and NOT make a pass.
