Burnage 20 West 17

By Dave Picken - October 6 2012
Burnage 20 West 17 The try of the season from Chocky Davies sadly wasn't enough to secure our first away of the season. But things are definitely continuing to improve specially in defence ..

Two kicks in the dying minutes meant we had to be content with a single bonus point on the artificial surface at Burnage.

With just one minute of normal time left we were leading by 17 points to 14 but a superb drop goal from home fly half Ross Winney levelled the scores right on 80 minutes, and then he won the game with a penalty deep into injury time after we were adjudged to have collapsed a maul.

It was harsh on West and specially severe on Chocky who had scored one of his trademark long distance efforts. On 50 minutes the veteran second row burst out of a ruck forty metres out and scorched away to leave the defence trailing. He outpaced both the full back and winger to touch down.

That made the score 14-8 to West and it was a well deserved lead after the much changed side had successfully nullified the home attack.

We had gone ahead after five minutes with a Stuart Waites penalty before Burnage got their only try of the game when Mick Scholes touched down after 20 minutes.

Waites was sin-binned for a deliberate knock on, but full back David Heckles restored West’s lead with a penalty following a deliberate knock on by the home side.

Both sides converted one more penalty each with West going into the break with a one point lead. Chocky's try was the first score of the second half , but Burnage pegged away and reduced the arrears to 14-11 with another penalty.

Stu Waites did restore the six point with another penalty on 62 minutes only for Burnage to take the points with a penalty on 69 minutes and those two match winning kicks right at the end.

Bad luck WEST!! Sounds like a much improved performance so let us keep it up and we will slowly climb out of danger and into a more comfortable situation. Notice we have played most of the top half of the table so far so games against lowere in the table will become 8/10 pointers. Keep working at it!!!!

Agonising to come so close but lets take heart from that. Lets have all the fit lads out training this week and lets start winning again.

Unlucky - what again?
Improving - what again?
Maybe a reality check is needed here.

And meanwhile seven or eight ex West u13s are playing down the road at Billingham. Hopefully the rest are playing somewhere rather than lost to rugby at a critical age?

Two unrelated comments there! 1st team performance has no bearing on the u13's situation, which is being explored as we speak and hopefully be resolved shortly! In the meantime I would suggest a more positive approach to the problem and do it in a thread of its own. However I do agree with your concern but not the way it was delivered. Carlo.

On another note well done to the lads on Sat, apart from the result I think the whole experience was a very positive one for the lads and furthermore the club! Well done to stags also on their win!

Tonesy,

Spoke to Carlo about it yesterday. Looking to get another player from the senior squad to help you out. Once I've sorted that we will start a recruitment drive in Schools etc.

Drop me an email with your number please mate.
