The start was delayed as the appointed referee failed to show so the ref from the 4th XV fixture (Mick Leng, I believe) was asked to oblige, and kindly did so, with Andy Quinn taking over that game.
Initially the Bucks struggled to put any period of sustained play together. Both scrums and lineouts were not proving to be a source of quality ball and they had to live off scraps. As the half wore on they began to put things together, lineout ball was secured and driven and scrums became more solid. However as they got their game together the Bucks conceded 12 points as the visitors showed skill, drive and power with some large forwards to the fore.
As the clocked ticked toward the break West at last put a period of sustained pressure together, involving patience and good basic skills. The ball was kept for some time through several phases and as the ball came out to Todd in the centre the visitors defence was stretched enough to allow the skipper to break through and score. Full Back Cole converted.
HT Bucks 7 – 12 Guisboro’.
The first 20 minutes of the 2nd half belonged to West. They took the lead when No8 Johnson forced his way over after another good period of sustained play. Cole converted. 14-12.
The visitors quickly replied with a penalty (14-15) before West got an excellent try. Scrum half Dave Cheshire turned back the clock with a bit of magic to create some space. Winger Jake Cooper took the ball on aggressively with flanker Phil Butler in support before Tim Blades drove over (19-15).
At this point West began to tire and Guisboro’ took the game by the scruff of the neck and drove over for a try (19-20).
As the game moved toward its close the visitors continued to attack but a dropped ball in midfield was hacked on by Jonny Cole and the speedy back dribbled on and cleverly waited for the ball to kick up into his hands before running under the sticks
Final Score 26 – 20
This new look Bucks team will take a little time to settle, some of last years young players have moved up to the Stags and they have been replaced by other youngsters plus several older players returning to the club.
The team managed to sort out problems at both scrum and line out time and when showing patience put some good rugby together. A little more self belief, perhaps belief in others around them and keeping the ball in hand will certainly help.
