On their pitch Seaton 1sts provided stern Pyman Cup oppoistion for the Stags. The home side had the benefit of the wind in the first half, but only had a Lewis Humble penalty to show for their efforts.
Their big pack had the Stags in trouble in the set pieces, and a combination of a very greasy ball and eager defence thwarted the Stags time after time as they looked to get the ball out wide.
When the try did come it was from a bit of enterprise from Seaton. They tried to run the ball in their own 22, but Darren Thomas could afford to gamble and he gratefully latched onto a looping pass to race in under the posts to set up an easy conversion for Zac Southern.
Seaton battled back and it was appropriate that the hard working Murry Stockdale was the man to get their try - diving over after concerted pressure on the Stags line.
Southern then put the Stags back in the lead with a penalty from the 22.
Playing at fly half Davy Tighe used the elements whenever possible to kick for position. It finally paid off when Ryan Painter made ground and fed Zac Southern. Space was tight up the left wing but Adam Larkin managed to get over despite the attentions of two defenders.
Kicking across the wind from the left touchline Southern put another nail in home hearts when his conversion sailed between the posts to make it 17-8.
With five minutes left the win was clinched when the Stags broke from the half way. Davy Tighe made ground on the right drawing the defenders before giving replacement Martin Boatman a sprint to the try line from the 22.
So the Stags joined the Bucks in finishing the season with Pyman silverware. The introduction of the Pyman Shield for second and third teams has been an undoubted success - despite both finals being marred by driving rain and wind.
Here's to next season.
