In the game at Brinkburn we battered the visiting line for the final twenty minutes but couldn’t get over and lost 5-0. It was very much the same at Beechwood where we had two thirds of the play, but once again failed to score a match winning try or even a penalty.
We weren’t helped by the loss of regular goal kicker Stu Waites who had to leave the field with a leg injury after twenty five minutes.
The home side had the best of the opening exchanges going ahead after five minutes with a penalty from stand off Luke Emmitt. Their momentum was halted on the quarter hour when flanker Jake Ashall was yellow carded for a dangerous tackle on Chocky.
Then Luke Watson came on for Waites and immediately made his presence felt with some crunching tackles in midfield. From then on we held the upper hand in terms of possession and territory.
Gareth Foreman took over the goal kicking duties levelling the scores just before the break after brother Andrew had made a trademark break. The home side infringing at the breakdown in front of the posts.
The second half saw us setting up a number of chances only to be thwarted by had tackling, bad luck and a greasy ball.
On 53 minutes Watson made a scorching break and had Scott Butcher alongside but the winger couldn’t hold the pass on a golden opportunity was missed.
On the hour Andy Foreman got over the line only for referee Simon Lazenby to rule he’d been held up. Minutes later he was again on the break. This time Lymm once again infringed at the breakdown and we opted to kick for a line-out in the corner.
We won the resulting scrum, but Lymm managed to wheel the pack and another golden opportunity was lost.
We were awarded two more penalties on 73 minutes and right in the final minute. Both were central but Gareth Foreman was unfortunate to see both go wide. Either would have secured a deserved four points, but we did move up one place in the league and have a string of home games to come.
