Bucks Enjoy the Sunshine
Howe Hat-trick West Bucks made the short journey over to Boys Brigade to take on the Durham & Northumberland Division 3 team in a hastily arranged friendly fixture. The day was almost perfect for rugby with a stiff breeze the only weather issue to contend with.

BBOB started the brighter and their larger, older pack soon put pressure on the West line. A score seemed likely before the home scrum half dotted the ball down over the line. Unfortunately it was the 5m line he had ‘scored’ over and the Bucks were able to clear.

On 15mins Bucks centre Neil Howe received the ball well within his own half and set off on a mazy run which saw him beat several would be tacklers to notch his first try (0-5).

On 20mins the Bucks at last put some decent team work together and No6 Jay Corbett finished the move off (0-10).

On 30mins scrappy ball from a scrum was seized upon by Howe and as the defence seemed to relax suspecting a clearance kick he set off on another dancing run which saw him go over under the posts. Paul Williamson converted. (0-17).

Almost straight from the kick off West went back on the attack and won a scrum 10 metres out from the home line. A backs move was called and blindside winger Michael Foster entered the line to crash over. Williamson converted (0-24).

On 40mins West scored a very good try. Good open running from a long way out, players drawing opponents and putting team mates into space resulted in No8 Danny Cookland cantering in from the 22 (0-29).

Straight from the kick off Full Back Matty Tyers caught the kick off and ran it back. He was able to link with other players before he was on hand to take a return pass and score. Half Time (0-34).

Tinker on the Attack

The 2nd half was only 3 mins old when Corbett scored his 2nd try. Martin Todd fielded a clearance kick and ran it back, from the resulting ruck, Corbett took a short pass to punch through the defence and go over. Williamson converted (0-41).

5 minutes later Foster grabbed his 2nd when he took an inside pass off Williamson at fly half to use his size to crash over (0-46).

BBOB were able to score their first points on 15mins (7-46).

West put pressure on the BBOB line straight from the kick off and Michael Robson, playing in the unaccustomed position of prop, took a short pop off a ruck to go over. (7-51).

Howe scored next to register his hat-trick, the experienced centre having caused problems all afternoon for the home defence with his strong and elusive running. This time multi-skilled prop Paul Dove converted (7-58).

Todd completed the Bucks scoring 25mins into the half. Again Dove converted (7-65).

BBOB completed the scoring with a well taken try as the ref blew up several minutes early. Final Score (65-12).

At times some of the Bucks rugby was very good but there was a tendency to work harder in attack than in defence. Too often players were isolated as players tended to watch what was happening rather than react to situations before they happen.

Next week is a very important game as the Bucks aim to complete a year as an unbeaten team when they travel to Darlingtonto take on the home clubs 2nd XV.

BBOB's first "try" reminds me of one our present Coroner scored after being sent clear in our 22 by a scintillating pass from yours truly.
He was certainly quick and sped away from the opposition to dive triumphantly over the line in a style which Chris Ashton has now adopted. Sadly for him it was the 22.
The game didnt continue long after that.
