Morpeth 15 Stags 36
Ben Lloyd The Stags travelled to Grange House Field to take on Morpeth II in a double header CaNDY League game. With the rare luxury of having, not only almost a full strength squad, but also with: a full complement of reserves, on a bright but very breezy day.

Morpeth winning the toss elected to play with the strong wind behind them giving the Stags a hard task of playing directly into the wind. From the kick off as a result of a misjudgement the home team had a lineout deep into the Stags half. But as a result of some good pressure by the west jumpers of Lloyd and Robson who continued to spoil the home team’s ball all afternoon they were unable to capitalise on their position.

As the game progressed, the Stags backs began to show their abilities and on the 12th minute right wing Mallinson rounded his opposite number to sprint into the corner for the games first score, unconverted (0-5).

Morpeth charged down field from the kick off and were immediately awarded a penalty under the posts for handling the ball in a ruck which the converted (3-5).

The majority of the next phases of play continued in the Stags half with occasional breakouts. Until the 25th minute when Mallinson was set free to run down the right wing from just inside the Morpeth half to cross the line in the corner, unconverted (3-10).

Three minutes later as a result of a turnover by a front row player in midfield Armstrong was set free to run in under the posts, converted by Wallis (3-17).

The Stags were immediately back on the attack and on the 31st minute scrum half and captain Thomas broke through a desperate home defence to score under the posts, converted by Wallis (3-24) which was the last score of the half.

The second half was only 5 minutes old when young full back Jordan broke through the home defence with a superb run to score on the left wing, unconverted (3-29).

The home team playing against the wind began to use their big forwards as runners and moved the ball up-field and finally breached the Stags defence on the 62nd minute mark, unconverted (8-29).

The Stags ran the ball back immediately and as a result of some very quick ruck ball Armstrong cut the angles very well to score under the posts, converted by Wallis (8-36).

Morpeth managed to work the ball back up field through their forwards and managed to cross the Stags line for the last score of the game on the 78th minute mark. (15-36).
