In the 80s and 90s the friendly Scotsman volunterred for a host of jobs and took on one of the most onerous with great aplomb - that of Junior Fixtures Secretary. Les Smith, West's Chairman of Rugby, said:" Doug was liked and respected by everyone. He was a very affable personality who worked tremendously hard in whatever job he took on.
"He had a a great many friends in every club in the town as well as beyond."

Sad news I often spoke to Doug when I saw him in Peterlee and he allways asked how we had got on the week before and the state of rugby in the town.He will be sadly missed.

Ann and I were saddened to hear the news. We had a great deal of time and respect for Doug who was a lovely and kind man.
Our thoughts and condolences are with his family at this sad time.

Many thanks for the very kind messages from both West supporters and friends alike.
Dad loved his rugby and had very fond memories of West, Rovers and the many clubs he visited.
Sad he is gone but happy he ended his days in his home and passed away quietly.
