As well as being Jonny Wilkinson's long time mentor he has been fitness coach to Wales and the Lions, as well as Newcastle Falcons and Sunderland football club. Last season he got involved with Norwich City when they were at the bottom of the championship and helped them climb the league.
Keith Lupton, once again involved in the coaching set up at West, says: "Steve has offered to take one of the midweek sessions later in August and it will be an ideal session for the lads.
"When I was at Mowden he took a session. The lads really enjoyed it and immediately afterwards said they'd found it really easy - but it was only over the next couple of days that they appreciated that they'd been taken to another level."
Blackie's involvement will follow on from some excellent training sessions in a very varied pre-season which has seen an average of 50 players out on Tuesdays and Thursdays.Last week the lads took part in a gym session with the Oaksway netball team run by nationally acclaimed coach Barbara Brown.
West's own fitness guru Michael Geritz says: "You could see why the girls were second top of the National One league. They have internationals and England academy players and it was an eye-opener for our lads as well as a big challenge.
Last night the girls then took part in one of Gez's sessions,in the pouring rain rain, including giving some tackle bags some big hits. Their opponents next season may be in for a bit of a shock.
