However their confidence was given a hefty knock when after only four minutes of the game tight-head prop Coates ended a series of well orchestrated forward drives to power over next to the right-hand post, converted by Wallis (7-0).
The Heughers were stung into action by this and began to string a series of mainly forward drives together and tested the Stags defence. As a result of this pressure the Stags began to concede a considerable number of penalties which will not have pleased the coaching staff or supporters. After an earlier miss the Heughers kicker managed to kick a penalty after 11 minutes (7-3).
The Stags then took the game to the Heughers but were continually frustrated by poor handling or conceding penalties. However on the 20 minute mark as a result of some good reactions in broken play Butcher was set free down the left wing to score in the corner, unconverted, Wallis being unlucky by the ball hitting the post and bouncing back infield(12-3).
After some good interplay between backs and forwards Wood was given the ball two metres out to charge over in the right-hand corner on the 35 minute mark, unconverted (17-3) which was the last score of the half.
The Heughers kicked of the second half in a bright fashion however after only four minutes a poor clearance kick up field was caught by Swales who set of on a tremendous 70 metre arching run down the left-hand side to score, converted by Wallis (24-3).
Play was then confined to the Heughers half of the field with the Stags piling on the pressure which gave Smart the opportunity to drive over from five metres out from a quick tap penalty on the 56 minute mark, unconverted(29-3).
The play was then immediately returned to the Heughers half of the field but the Stags were unable to increase their lead by a series of wrong options and conceding too many penalties. However on the 27minute mark as they kept up the pressure Hare was given the ball some ten metres out and stepped through two defenders to score, converted by Wallis (36-3).
Whilst this was the end of the scoring coach Southern on as a replacement flanker was given the ball some ten metres out but he unselfishly opted to pass the a supporting player who was unable to hold on-to the ball with an open line begging in front of him.
Whilst this was a competent performance from the Stags side there are many issues that they will need to address before they take on: Hartlepool Athletic in the Semi Final of the Pyman Cup on Wednesday the 23rd on King George’s Field K/O 6-30pm.
