Seaton 6 Stags 45
First try The Stags visit to Hornby Park was expected to be a good test of this young team’s ability against a well organised D.N. team. They did not disappoint with a display of running rugby and good swift handling to run in 7 tries on a cold night with a strong easterly wind blowing straight up the pitch.
Kicking off against the elements the match got of to a flying start for the Stags whose game plan was to run with the ball as much as possible. With Cheslin running through a gap, in the home defence as a result of, some slick handling for the first try after only three minutes converted by Wallis (7-0). This was followed 4 minutes later by Edwards cutting through the defence to score under the posts, converted by Wallis (14-0).

Seaton forwards then began to ‘up their game’ and put the Stags pack under pressure. However the resolute defence that has became a trademark of this team was once again prominent and despite the pressure Seaton were unable to make much headway. However they were awarded a series of penalties for infringements at the ruck, two of which were kicked and one missed in the space of four minutes (14-6).

Having weathered this period a good move from the back of a maul on the 27th minute allowed Cheslin room to round the defence and score under the posts converted by Wallis (21-6) the rest of the half was played out in the middle of the park.

Both teams made changes at half time and within five minutes of the restart Butcher was set free to round his opposite number and score converted by Wallis (28-6). The Stags pack now began to get the measure of their opponents and began to up the tempo, then after a series of good forward drives Smart crossed the line on the 53rd minute mark, converted by Wallis (35-6). With the Stags now moving the Seaton pack about the field with some very good handling by backs and forwards on the 65th minute mark Smart was on hand to complete a good handling move and score his second try wide out on the right, unconverted (40-6).

With just three minutes left on the clock Edwards rounded of a very good night for the Stags by scoring in the left hand corner, unconverted (45-6). Credit must go to the Seaton players who despite the score line kept trying to play the game in the right spirit and competed to the very end. It was also very good from a ‘West’ perspective to see Tim Sawyer back on the field of play after his horrific injury doing what he does best: disrupting the opposition at every opportunity.

The Stags continue on their 2008 tour of Hartlepool with their next outing on Saturday against the Heughers at the New Friarage with a 1 o’clock kick off. The next Pyman cup game is the Semi Final of the competition against Hartlepool Athletic at King George’s field on Wednesday the 23rd kick off 18-30.
