Boatman Returns Team For City
By Dave Picken - March 1 2007
Life in N2E is continuing to be more than interesting. After a lack lustre start to 2007 who would have thought that West would be third and still in with a shout of the promotion play-off place? Or that the battle to avoid the drop would be so intense and so local? >

Everything is still to play for at both ends of the table - but nobody will be more desperate for two points than Durham City [Hollow Drift 2.15 kick off].

Our hosts could have done themselves a power of good if they'd maintained their first half display last week and seen off Rovers.

Instead, it was the Frairageman who came away with two points, while Horden were digging deep and coming away with an excellent two points at an undisciplined Driffield.

There is no doubt that West have played a major part in the excitement at the bottom of the table. Failing to capitalise on second half territory at Horden, and having no answer to Rovers's Power play [sic] at the Friarage, gave new hope to both our neighbours. City will be hoping for similar largesse.

Both Stubbs and Burgon are away watching England in Dublin, so John Stabler has the rudder to himself. He picks a side which sees the return of Jonny Boatman, our most influential player this season, and Aaron Myers. Henry Tones steps down to the bench after a lively display last week on his slightly premature return from long term injury.

Carl Miller also did very well in the back row last week but moves up to the second row with young Tom Dixon also away in Ireland.

The other changes is in the backs where Neil Howe is unavilable so Paul Moss comes in at inside centre. Mikey Young was a doubt, because of Falcons commitments, but has been given the go-ahead to play.

Hollow Drift will be heavy and it promises to be a hard fought encounter. It will also possibly be unique in that West hope Rovers win and Rovers hope West win!

West Hare, Painter, Edwards, Moss, Todd, Tighe [capt], Young, Carr, A Dixon, Robinson, Rudd, C Miller, D Boatman, Myers, J Boatman.

Norris, Tones, C Cheslin

So Myers and Jon Boatman are back. DP are you trying the baffle the lads with words such as 'largesse' ????
I don't think there can be any complaints over back-row selection. We are strong in that department and I am sure Tones will get on at some stage.
Good luck to the lads. They need to give this game their best shot and see what happens with other results.
It's never over till the fat prop waddles off for his summer holiday.

How can Mr. Myers come straight back into the team when he did not play last week? Surley a bench spot should have been given?

you could say the same thing about boatman - but I'm definately not in the camp that says you can't come straight back into the team if you've missed a week. To put a not fully match fit Tonesy in ahead of Myers and Jonny Boatman would just be silly. You should put your best players available on the pitch.

It's not as if we've got some new signings waltzing straight into the 1st team with one of them not even having trained with the team, let alone been on the bench!

It is only fair to the other clubs that you pick your strongest 15. If you had not started with either Young or Myers we would have had something to say. If you have England players at your club you expect them to play. Good luck!

beach banks - i've never known someone get so obsessed with a team selection as you have been with wests for this week. Have Horden got a game?? What's their team??

Incase you'd forgotten, you've got the tigers tomorrow - a big match that seems to have escaped your attention:-D

Calm down. You only just beat City and all the talk on here was about missing players, players and coaches in Dublin and all sorts. You did not give the impression of taking the game seriously as you realistaicallyy have no chance of promotion. But you have a duty to approach every game in the same way specially where relegation is concerned. Well done on the win it was much celebrated in our club.

Totally wrong there Beach Banks. I fully believe West turn up and give 100% every game and try to win every game

Mr Quinn I think you are correct that we set out to win every game but there have been occasions this season where we havent " turned up!" Middlesbroigh at home, Billingham, Rovers and Horden spring to mind!

I agree there but i stand by what i said about all the lads going out with the intention of winning. Sometimes you have a bad day at the office as it were but the lads always try to win

Agreed which is why we are 3rd. But with a bit more application anmd better tacts we might have been 2nd or joint 2nd. Quite remarkable considering the age of the squad. Can someone advise me whether Young and Myers will be here next season?

good question that. Despite their clear commitment and love for west their talent certainly befits a higher level of rugby.

promotion for west will be much more challenging if they move on.

Certainly no one would want to hold anyone back from playing the highest level possible and i am sure they will go onto higher things. But on the other hand, there are plenty of lads there more than capable to step in and do a good job for West

I'm sure there are but the difference between doing a good job and promotion form.
