Fordingbridge 32-3 Southampton

Despite their terrible start to the season, Saints started the game full of confidence and desperate to turn things around. But the game got off to an awful start when an offload out of a tackle was intercepted by the 'Bridge full back who outpaced the Saints defence for an early try.

Saints then started to put together some good attacking drives and were starting to use the ball well, but again handling errors were costing them good opportunities. Fordingbridge missed two penalty opportunities, but soon after they found some space down the left wing, wrong-footed the defence and were soon crossing for the second try.

It was a tough afternoon for the visitors who made some good attacking opportunities themselves. Tony Cador punched some big holes from inside centre, while Jamie Hocke was again making himself known from flanker. But he tested the offside line once too often and spent the next ten minutes on The Naughty Step.

But Fordingbridge were always a threat and turned more opportunities into points in the second half. The full back could have had a second but he was judged to have knocked-on as he stretched for the line, however they did convert a number of opportunities as the Saints defence tired. The final score was 32-3, but that didn't tell the true tale of a much improved Saints performance. A huge tackle from Tony Cador that nearly cut the Bridge player in half; a solid debut from Ben on the wing; good ball retention and powerful running. But Southampton need to cut out the mistakes and string together longer phases of attacking rugby if they are going to turn the season around.
