Tough start for Sean's 2s
By Dave Ward - September 17 2008
Saints 2s travelled to Locks Heath Pumas, while the Vets played host to Fareham Heathens 2s. >

Sean O'Donnell's 2s side found life tough against the Pumas, falling to a 29-10 defeat. Despite some great individual performances, the team was never quite able to work as a unit and lost out at the breakdown. But the game still featured some big Southampton performances- notably from Matt Vickerson who showed pace and agility on the wing and Chubby, who was formidable in the tackle.

Both Saints tries were scored by Pat, after quick play was followed up by good support. But the Pumas forwards were too disruptive for Saints to get flowing and they sealed a comfortable victory, 29-10.

The game also saw Saints legend Wayne Allen's son Harry make his competitive debut for Southampton. Will this be the start of another glittering Alen rugby career?

Meanwhile the Vets salvaged some pride for the club, beating Fareham Heathens 2s 32-26. Tries came from Grant Whiteside (2), Neil McBride, Andy Masterman, while Mick Jones scored on his debut as Vets skipper. The biggest disappointment came from Alex Scott, who only scored once. We think that's juggable, Mr Scott.

Awesome performances from the entire front row, while the backs strung some good moves together and looked threatening. Ultimately, lack of fitness showed and Saints conceded some soft tries late on. But hey, if your idea of a warm up is a pint and a pie, what you expect?
