Saints off to a winning start!
By Bill Beaumont - September 16 2008
Sandown and Shanklin toppled by last minute winner... >

A tough start to the 2007-08 season saw Saints cross the Solent to face the 2005-06 Hampshire Division One champions, Sandown & Shanklin Hurricanes.

The islanders were looking for an early chance to stamp their authority on the division, following last season's relegation from London SW4. However just like the last time the sides met, when Saints threatened to ruin S&S's title celebrations, Sandown & Shanklin seem to have underestimated the strength of character of the visitors.

Some big scrumagging from S&S's props caused all sorts of problems for the Saints front row and provided the Hurricanes a solid platform from which to attack. Credit to the Saints' backs though, who showed great commitment in the tackle. Some good forward work from the Saints kept them in the game, as firstly Alan Butler and then Matt Symmonds were driven over by solid catch-and-drive moves from attacking line-outs.

As the game drew to a close, Sandown and Shanklin led 20-16 and surely thought the game was theirs. However in the final minute, with the home side possibly contemplating their post-match grub, Dave Griffiths showed the pace and skill that has kept him in the 1st XV for the last 47 seasons as he crossed under the posts to snatch victory. The conversion was good and Saints boarded the Red Funnel with a pint in hand and a 20-23 win in the bag.

Great result lads!
