The 1sts and 2nds enjoy victories as promotion nears and 3rds now in promotion hunt

Gary Cunliffe

Gary Cunliffe continued his fine form with the bat in Sunday Division 2

Barnard Castle were the opponents both home and away this weekend and a Hartlepool double gave the 1st team a much needed win.  For the 2nds they travelled to Barney knowing that a good result was needed to keep up the promotion drive and deny Barnard Castle any possibility of a late season surge for second place in Division 2.

Both matches were very similar scoring, at Park Drive Hartlepool restricted Barnard Castle to 191 for 7 with Marc Symington the pick of the bowlers with 4 for 50.  Hartlepool replied with an excellent opening partnership between Rickard and Coverdale with an excellent run rate.  Coverdale dragged one on when he reached 40 and soon after Marc Symington departed after a misunderstanding with the running.  Jon Rickard held firm and in an unbroken partnership with Craig Symington  they took Hartlepool through to a convincing win.  Jon Rickard remained 96 not out and Craig Symington 40 not out to secure a morale boosting win for the team.

Peter Rhoden's 2nds won the toss and asked Barnard Castle to bat in a crucial fixture for their promotion hopes.  The first 25 overs went reasonably well for Hartlepool as they contained the home batting.  the second half of the innings however was very ragged and the home team scored heavily in the last 10 overs to post 193 and set a challenging target.

When Liam Prosser went early and Peter Rhoden fell for 24 the contest was really on.  At 60 for 4 Hartlepool were in danger of losing to their nearest challengers.  The match however was turned in Hartlepool's direction with Tyler Temple and Jake Richardson making valuable contributions.  Temple followed up his recent century with a match winning 77 not out and Richardson with 46 saw the team home by 3 wickets with only 2 balls to spare.

The 20 points secured now mean that only 15 points are now needed to ensure promotion to Division 1 after a long time in Division 2.  With three matches left and 60 points available it should be a formality to see the team join Norton the current league leaders who guaranteed promotion yesterday with a win.  Norton still have a 21 point lead on Hartlepool and are likely to be crowned champions unless they slip up badly in the last three games.

Hartlepool 3rds defeated local rivals Seaton Carew by 7 wickets with Gary Cunliffe 92 not out and Harrison Smith 54 not out the stars with the bat.  Skipper Ollie Mole with 5 wickets did the main damage as Seaton were dismissed for 187.

Almost there for the 2nds and the 3rds still have a chance of promotion so the season still has a lot to offer fans.

Excellent wins against Barnard Castle
