Hartlepool teams go into the weekend league programme after a very mixed set of results last weekend. Marton’s bowling attack proved to be too strong for the first team but were unable to force the win in their bid to retain the championship. Highlight of the batting was an unbeaten half-century for Jon Cannon after his mid-season break.
Marc Symingtom and Saman Jayantha bowled 39 of the available 50 overs during Marton’s innings as they ground out 182. Symmo adding 4 wickets to his total for the season. Early wickets and a weakened team due to unavailability and injury meant that Hartlepool had a mountain to climb but never got beyond base camp other than Cannon.
The 2nds enjoyed a victory and turned the tables on Billingham who they lost to the week previously. Chris Suttill looked in command making 50 before an ill-judged sweep saw him bowled. The relatively secure position of 80 for 1 soon became 90 for 4 before the decisive partnership took hold of the match. Iain Walker and Jack Hutchinson (52) mixed solid defence with attacking strokes to slowly take charge of the Billingham bowlers. Walker continued to dominate through to 50 overs to reach 75 not out and take Hartlepool to an excellent 238. Billingham were never able to repeat their batting of the previous week but did look like holding on until late wickets from Adil Ahamad and ollie Mole were added to the 4 wicket haul of Smith to secure 20 points for the win.
The 3rds crashed to a heavy defeat against Maltby after Hussein took 5 for 8 to bowl Hartlepool out for only 51. The bowlers had done their job to bowl out Maltby with Josh Cannon returning 3 for 14.
