Win at Blackhall ends week on a high note
By Freelancer - June 28 2009
Hartlepool recorded a league double over local rivals Blackhall with a comfortable victory at the Welfare Park. The win will hopefully have lifted spirits after some recent setbacks and disappointing results. >
Mark Symington took another 6 wickets to demonstrate what a potent force he is with the ball especially in combination with Janaka Gunaratne who picked up another 3 wickets. A depleted Blackhall side struggled throughout the match to be eventually dismissed in less than 40 overs for 159. Warren Swan was the danger man as ever for Blackhall but on this occasion his efforts were not sufficient to halt Hartlepool.
Chris Fawcett batted through the Hartlepool reply to see see Hartlepool home with plenty of time to spare. There were useful contributions from Gough and Gunaratne as Blackhall's depleted bowling attack were unable to mount any form of challenge. A welcome victory and 20 valuable points to keep Hartlepool in the top third of the league at present.
Blackhall Viewpoint:
HARTLEPOOL completed a derby double over Blackhall in emphatic style by eight wickets on Saturday.
While Hall were missing six regulars, that shouldn’t detract from the fact Pool were convincing winners at a dank and dismal Welfare Park.
The visitors won the toss against their rivals (as seems usual) and Hall were asked to have first use of a green-looking wicket.
Makeshift opener David Mole and South African Warren Swan gave the hosts a solid start before the former became the first of the excellent Marc Symington’s six victims.
Swan had looked set for a big hundred as he launched several big blows out of the ground and after hitting Janaka Gunaratne for a big six, he tried to repeat the dose but was brilliantly caught on the deep midwicket boundary by Chris Fawcett for a superb 80.
The rest of the batting folded tamely, apart from a useful 21 from Chris Brown, as Hall posted a mediocre 159 all out inside 40 overs.
Symington was the pick of a good bowling attack, claiming 6-63.
In reply, former Durham star Michael Gough was brilliantly caught out by Phil Bell, a running catch on the boundary off Brian Sullivan, but that was the only real scare for Pool.
Chris Fawcett rode his luck early doors to post his second half-century against the Collierymen this season and finished on 69 not out.
Gunaratne was eventually snared by Michael Bell, who bowled an excellent spell, and the finishing touches were applied by ex Durham player Symington as Pool romped to an easy win with plenty of time to spare.

The second team were in a good battle with a very youthful Stokesley team. James Johnston looked in good form and showed good technique to make 51 before getting caught from the leading edge. John Daniels was the other main aggressor with 70 before attempting one big hit too many late in the innings. Tom Gavin made a useful 31 before losing his leg stump to a yorker. Unfortunately the last 10 overs only produced 40 runs despite having wickets in hand as batsmen failed to rotate the strike. Too often it was swing and miss rather than ensuring they got bat on ball and taking the singles that were on offer. The 50 over total of 222 was competitive but at least 20 runs short given the conditions. Stokesly responded in confident fashion with McGill leading the way with a stylish performance. Hartlepool's bowlers began to struggle as light rain fell and Stokesley were accelerating towards the target. Rainfall increased and the umpires took the players from the field despite protests from the visitors. Bizarrely they returned despite rain still fallling, only to see the match abandoned 2 overs later with Stokesley well poised. Hartlepool benefited on this occasion taking 6 draw points from an under par performance.
