Heavy defeat keeps Firsts in trouble
By Freelancer - August 25 2008
Hartlepool slumped to a heavy defeat against Darlington and gained a single point for their efforts to avoid relagation. The batting failed and early hope from the bowlers was stifled by the Darlington middle order. >
Hartlepool's confidence is obviously low at present as a series of under par performances has seen them slump to second bottom of the Premier Division. After defeating Darlington earlier in the season they held hopes of a double but that never looked likely.
A total of 99 all out was not good enough to test Darlington despite 2 early wickets. David Eccles and Daniel Hodgson coasted to victory despite surviving a couple of missed chances. Hartlepool now have to pick themselves up and look for vastly improved performances against Northallerton and Bishop Auckland at home before travelling to Billingham Synthonia on the final day of the season.
In contrast the second team scored 259 for 4 away at Thornaby in Division 2 with a century for Hashim Ahmad 107* and half-centuries for James Johnston and Chris Buttery. The gulf between division 2 and Premier League is obvious and players regularly score heavily for the 2nds without reproducing that sort of performance when batting in the firsts. With 3 games to go perhaps players need to throw caution to the wind and show some aggression to get the results the team so badly need. 100% effort will be required to prevent a bad season resulting in relegation. Let's fight our way off the floor and see what happens.
