Battling draw after early promise against Great Ay
By Freelancer - June 29 2008
A much needed victory was a distinct possibility in this match until Rio Afridi turned things around for Great Ayton. Good batting from Chris Fawcett and Michal Gough looked to have provided an ideal platform with a solid opening partnership. >

Hartlepool's encounter with Great Ayton was dominated by bowlers in the main with no batsman able to pass 50 in either innings.  Great Ayton were subdued once Rio Afridi has departed and Hartlepool's attack of Palmer, Jackson, Gunarathne and Gough pulled the home team into the contest.

Thara Gunarathne finished with 4 wickets, Palmer 3 and one each for Jackson and Gough as Great Ayton were bowled out for 161 in the 50th over.  Debutant Chris Fawcett (43) and Mike Gough (38) began soundly and took the total to 91 before the first wicket fell.  It proved to be the spark that Great Ayton were looking for and wickets began to fall at regular intervals.  Rio Afridi and John Grainge proving irresistible as they scented an unlikely victory.

Hartlepool were indebted to the defensive qualities of Jack Wilkinson who battled for 51 balls to see the match through to a draw with the last man at the crease.  Hartlepool 9 points  Great Ayton 13 pts
