Double defeat puts Pool in trouble
By Freelancer - June 18 2008
A double defeat in the league plus a Redcar win against Marske have put Hartlepool close to the bottom of the league. Last week's win at Darlington did not prove to be a springboard for more success and improvement must come soon if relegation is to be avoided. >

The absence of Mike Gough for the weekend was never going to be easy but Hartlepool's weekend defeats away to Bishops and Northallerton brought too few points.

Bishops piled up a massive score which Hartlepool were never likely to overhaul on current form. Only Tyler Temple with a 50 ball 70 runs showed positive intent to score at a competitive rate. The other batsmen need to bat with that sort of freedom if this season is to be turned around. Runs have come too slowly all season to date and with the bowlers not yet firing on all cylinders a poor string of results was inevitable.

Sunday's difficult match away to Northallerton was again a battle for the batters. Thara Gunarathne with 79 and Jon Cannon with his 3rd fifty of the season made a respectable total but one that Hartlepool needed to bowl brilliantly to defend. It didn't happen and defeat again resulted.

The 2nds suffered a second league defeat of the season with James Johnston scoring a fifty but the team fell short by 24 runs.

to score 200 first innings you need to score, as a team, at an average run-rate of 66.6%.

only three 1st team batsmen have an overall run-rate of over 50% - and only one of those has scored at over that 66.6%.

3 score in the 40's and one just under 40%.

the average run-rate for the top 7 this season is 51.4%, which means a par score of around 154 - well short of that 200 mark.

What we need is to have our strongest side out more regularly.

We have only had that in 3 out of 12 league games - winning 2 of those and drawing the other - gaining 49 points from those 3 games and only 47 from the other 9.

true, but if we had batsmen that could get us 250 you could bowl who you like-you could have gordon haw off his long run at one end and watto at the other

I agree having first choice players available is better but unfortunately we need to perform even when they are not available.

It is a problem for the club but whatever 11 take the field the attitude needs to be more positive with the bat whether batting first or last.

Points are all that matter ahead of personal performances especially when we lie second bottom.

200 for 9 is better than 199 for 6 in my book when we are batting.

Let's get some runs scored!
