The Nomads boys had worked hard prior to the game, with a friendly game against Mold Alex reserves and three sessions working on set pieces and using video match analysis leading up to the fixture.

The side were beaten earlier in the season by The New Saints by five goals to two in the Welsh Youth Cup, so knew they had to be at there best to win this cup.

Nomads had started the better of the two sides creating a number of chances and starting at a great tempo. But it started bad for Nomads when TNS grabbed the opener after the impressive forward Scott Quigley of TNS latched onto a threw ball after a miss communication between Jack Jones and Ryan Jones was latched onto and finished with ease.

To add to Nomads woes center defender Wyn Pierce had to come off injured after just twenty five minutes meaning Shaun Tinsley dropping into defense with Ryan Williams coming off the bench and play in midfield.

It was Tinsley that grabbed the equalizer for Nomads after the TNS keeper came flying off his line and his clearance was blocked, falling to Tinsley who from just over thirty yards with an open goal the defender clipped the ball superbly into the back of the net leveling the score.

Nomads were playing very good possession football and continued to create chances with strikers Aled Reece and Rhys Healey both coming close. But just before the break a TNS corner was cleared but only onto the edge of the area where the TNS midfielder drove in and finished into the net.

2-1 to TNS it finished going into the break.

Although trailing it was a positive team talk at half time as the Nomads players were playing well and were doing what was asked by the coaches, with the tactics asked to play.

Striker Rhys Healey was causing TNS problems through out and had two great one on one chances early on, but was denied by the TNS keeper. A great run by Healey saw the striker brought down on the edge of the area. A Nomads well worked set piece saw Aled Reece’s shot miss judged by The New Saints keeper and Nomads had leveled two two.

TNS had their chances to in a real end to end fixture. They had a free kick on the edge of the area which was denied by a great save from Jack Jones as well as another effort cleared off the line by skipper Ryan Jones.

With just fifteen minutes to go Nomads had taken the lead after another well worked set piece saw Jordan Becks delivery headed home by skipper Ryan Jones.

A well deserved lead for the side who had created lots of chances in the second half. But with just five minutes to go TNS had a counter attack and after a goal mouth scramble the Oswestry side grabbed an equalizer. The final whistle was blown and extra time was upon us.

The Nomads players had worked hard this season with fitness levels very high with players training three times a week and games in the reserve league Saturday and youth league Sunday. Similar to the ninety minutes there were chances for both. Again the TNS goalkeeper denying Healey twice with good saves.

The extra time period couldn’t separate the two sides and so the cup was to be decided with penalties.

A very exciting run of events saw keeper Jack Jones be the hero of the shoot out with a fantastic performance in the sticks. Jones set the standard on the first penalty with a great stop top corner. Jordan Beck then stepped up, and slotted nicely into the bottom corner. 1-0 to the Nomads.

TNS’s second penalty was again denied by Jones who tipped the midfielders effort onto the bar. Jamie Wynne then stepped up and similar to Beck then found the bottom corner with a great strike. 2-0.

Remarkably TNS’s third penalty was also missed when the players effort was smashed over the cross bar. Striker Rhys Healey then had a penalty to win the cup but unfortunately his effort straight down the middle was easily saved. Still 2-0 to the Nomads.

TNS then stepped up and scored well on their fourth penalty, but Nomads still had an opportunity to win it when striker Aled Reece stepped up. But remarkably his effort came crashing back of the post. A very intriguing shoot out.

Up stepped Quiggley of TNS who was a very strong player for the side in the game for a penalty he had to score. But keeper Jack Jones sealed the win with his third fantastic side and Nomads were crowned North East Wales champions.

A remarkable end to a really fantastic game of football played between two very good footballing sides and a great end to a great season for the youth team and all players involved.

As well as winning the reserve league this campaign, the Nomads victory in this cup competition defeating Welsh Youth Cup finalists TNS was a great achievement.

There were great performances all across the pitch. Shaun Tinsley and Jones were excellent at the back as were full back Jordan Beck and Jamie Roberts. Jamie Wynne in centre midfield did a great job winning his aerial battles with forward players Ryan Edwards, Reece and Healey constantly threating The New Saints back line.

A lot of candidates for man of the match but three saves in a penalty shoot out to top a number of great saves in the game topped a special performance and was well deserved for keeper Jack Jones who was playing his final game for the youth team with him being an under 20 next season.

A big well done to all players for all there hard work through out and a big thank you to all parents for the continued support through out.
